St Sunniva Hermitage, Shetland, Scotland
Travel to the most northerly island of Scotland and in the outskirts of Haroldswick Bay you will find an Orthodox monastic hermitage and Mother Mary, who has lived in the Shetland Islands for fifteen years.
Although Mother Mary lives a solitary life of prayer and work, her relationship to the local community is important and supportive. Her life follows in the long tradition of eremitic life in the Shetland Isles, dating back to Papil priests who arrived from Ireland in 7th or 8th Century.
The hermitage, which is within the Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, is dedicated to Saint Sunniva who was born in Ireland in 10th Century, but left to escape marriage to a heathen. Some say she visited the island of Unst before landing in Selje island, Norway. She is now patron saint of Bergen.
There is a small chapel in the hermitage where Mother Mary mainly practises the Jesus Prayer with liturgical prayer at the weekends. Every couple of months she travels to Dunblane, Edinburgh and Glasgow to attend services, see her spiritual father, clergy and friends. Once a year she travels to stay at a monastery and attend a conference.
This monastic witness is also supported by Saint Sunniva Trust comprising of four trustees living in Scotland.
Visitors are welcome to visit the chapel in the summer months, but please contact Mother Mary beforehand. There is no visitor accommodation.
